BLOW BAR BALI – Its not what you think it is

Dont let the name fool you, the Blow Bar Bali is the best thing that has happened to Seminyak since KuDeTa put in a pool.  The first of its kind in Bali, and correct me if I’m wrong, but also this side of the equator – Blow Bar Bali is your hairdresser, nail salon and favourite bar all rolled into one, aka; your new favourite friend.

From the moment you walk thru the door, the place is abuzz, music, hair dryers, cocktails being shaken, champagne corks going off, it instantly feels like a fun place to be.

The salon has a Soho – New York feel to it. Centre stage is the long bar with elegant padded high back stools, where you can sit and drink champagne, martinis, or an earl grey tea – and, get this, have your hair done at the same time – BRILLIANCE.

Everything is here – with special areas all dedicated to different types of treatments, I loved the boudoir room with the big black round velvet sofa where you sit back and get your mani and pedis done. So Luxe.

The treatment menu is extensive, from big girl curls to the sleek sangria, also on offer are specialised hair treatments, make up, waxing, threading, eye brow tinting, opi gel nails, the list goes on and on. And, don’t you worry you can bring your Man here, as the boys are definitely not forgotten – with a barber on hand offering all the cool kid cuts, bro dry’s, scotch and shaves, or they can simply sit back and enjoy a tequila and cigar in the courtyard whilst you are blowed to perfection.

I had an absolute blast there – the vibe was fun to say the least, the place was super busy with a hens group, all in to get pampered, something that the Blow Bar Bali specialises in and they can most certainly handle large groups.

This concept is perfect, heading out for a fun night out, no more frizzy Bali hair, call in for session and they will have you looking totally glam all ready for a Seminyak sunset. Grab a friend, grab 10 friends, grab your boyfriend – this place is a treat for everyone.

Don’t feel like getting your do done, no problem, feel free to just call on in and sit yourself down and work your way thru their cocktail menu.

Hairdresser Heaven, Pamper Paradise, Day-spa Delight, Bali’s Best Bar, call it what you like but I can tell you that Blow Bar Bali is now officially my new favourite place to hang out – all they need is a pool (and don’t put it past them) and I would more than likely move in forever.

Open all day everyday and well into the night – contact them here to make an appointment

Check out all that they do here via their extensive menu

Blow Bar Bali is for big girls, small girls, young at heart girls and all the men in their life.

Its no secret that us snobs love a beach club and that Four Seasons properties around the world are major snob material – so it makes sense that their Club located on the impeccable Jimbaran beach is nothing less than 5 star in every way.

And the great thing is – you don’t have to be luxing it up at the Four Seasons Jimbaran to gain entry, this beautiful beach club is open to everyone that wants to visit for the day and soak up the sundara magic.

Be ready to be WOW’d when you arrive, the beach is pristine and perfect, but the 57m long infinity edge pool perched alongside the beach stretches longer than you could ever imagine.

Be prepared to feel like a rock star, the staff here are absolute superstars and always ready to fluff your towels, pour your wine and serve your food, whatever you need – these guys are onto it!! Bottled water, sunscreen, oversized white towels, frozen fruit treats are handed out regularly and are all part of the Sundara service.

Sit back relax and enjoy that bazillion dollar view, whether its while your lounging on your daybead, or whilst swanning around in the pool grab yourself a cocktail, their list is full of incredible creations all crafted by the legendary Javier de las Muelas whom I was fortunate enough to meet when he flew in to town from Barcelona to take over the Sundara list. The Bitter Sweet Love and Wasabi Martini are favourites.

Hold onto your beach hat, your day is about to get considerably better, the daytime food menu here is so tasty, even if you just consumed everything in sight at your hotels buffet breakfast, you will eat, this menu is too tasty not to. Enjoy your feast as you sit by the pool or pop yourself on the terrace under the shade of one of the oversized umbrellas, whilst still soaking up that gorgeous view.

At the end of the day you will find it hard to pack up and move, and, be told now, the Sunsets at Sundara are spectacular and well worth hanging around for, the fiery sky lights up that enormous pool and creates the most incredible romantic setting.

There is so much to love about Sundara, Sunday brunch, the wine list, the cocktail list, the Kids menu and get this… a dedicated kids area and pool with nannys on hand to entertain and take care of your bambinos – hello perfect!

If you are in Bali – a day trip to Sundara is an absolute must, you will fall in love with this place and….. quite possibly your significant other all over again.

Tips :

take a driver / taxi – because i guarantee you – you will drink more of their cocktail than you think you will

phone ahead and make a booking – there is a charge to book a daybed but comes off your food and beverage bill

A 45 minute drive from Seminyak (well okay can be 60 minutes in bad traffic) is a blissfully beautiful stretch of beach known very well to surfers from around the world called Keramas.

The word is slowly getting out about this surfer’s paradise and as a result accommodation is slowly popping up in and around this picturesque area, one of which is the magnificent Komune Beach Club & Resort.

I was looking for a new beach club to try and the photos I had seen of Komune totally captivated me – this stunningly beautiful resort is set on 180 metres of private lawns and gardens in amongst the 100’s of coconut trees and a total beach front property – where you witness every super sized snobby wave barrel on in.

Komune Resort Bali

As I made my way down the tropical lush pathway that lead from the carpark to the beach club – I was in total amazement of the magnificent stretch of Keramas beach, the photos I had seen did not do this place justice, WHAT – Why had I not been here before ?? I definitely have to get out of Seminyak more.

We grabbed a lounge right next to the beautiful bluer than blue and rounder than round beachside pool which was totally surrounded by day beds, bean bags and umbrellas to help shade you from the intense afternoon sunshine. This place has such a chilled, relaxed, party vibe – tunes were playing, waves were crashing, kids were swimming, suffers were taking on the gigantic waves, the staff were being incredibly helpful and their service was incredibly fantastic. I knew it was going to be a great day – and I was not disappointed.

Komune Resort Bali

Komune Resort Bali

Paddleboards and snorkels are on hand for when the tide goes out allowing you to explore the rock pools and crystal clear lagoons. And of course – if you surf, this venue could not be more perfect for you – it’s a match made in heaven.

Komune Resort Bali

At night Komune has an outdoor beachside cinema showcasing weekly surfing events, highlights from the days or weeks surfing are shown on the big screen as well as regular screenings of latest release movies

Hungry? (silly question) this incredible beachside structure houses a restaurant and bar both providing some amazingly good food choices, healthy salads, juices, burgers, pizzas along with some pretty delicious seafood. You will not go hungry here – with something on the menu to satisfy everyone. The cocktails are pretty awesome too all served with a huge big Balinese smile.

Komune Resort Bali

When it came time to head back to the Yak, I have to be honest – I just did not want to leave, I felt totally at home here and the view that was laid out right in front of me was totally hypnotic – I hadn’t felt this chilled in a long time.

Komune Resort Bali

Komune Resort & Beach Club has so much to offer, you dont have to be a full time surfer to enjoy it here,  the hotel has a range of rooms, suites and villas which cater to everyone’s budget, along with a health “hub” a well equipped fitness centre and yoga retreat, long lap pool along with a day spa – there is not one reason you have to leave this resort after you arrive. Not knowing much about Komune when I visited, I can tell you I made it my priority to find out more once I arrived – this place is heaven. Now I have visited for the day – I am going to make it another priority to go back – but next time – I will definitely be staying for a couple of days to experience the hospitality that Komune is so obviously well known for. I would even go as far to say – skip Seminyak, get off the plane and head straight here for your holiday. I have no doubt that you will walk away feeling more relaxed than ever before.

Komune Resort Bali

If your heading for the day – be sure to phone ahead and let them know your coming, as very often they are booked out for weddings, etc. I mean really – why wouldn’t you want to get married here. What a great place to start the rest of your life together with the one you love.

I cannot recommend Komune highly enough and I cannot wait to get back again – but next time – I will be staying for a couple of days not a couple of hours. They may have trouble getting me to leave.

On a side note – my partners son left his ipad on one of the day beds, he did not tell us about this until the next day…. We called Komune, and yes his ipad had been found and was locked away – we are grateful to the wonderful staff at Komune for this.

SHOPPING : Some of my favourite places to stop for a shop

I LOVE shopping, I confess, I am a shopaholic, I remember way way back when I used to holiday in Bali (before I decided to call this island my home) one of the things I used to get excited about was trawling the crazy streets, stepping carefully so not to fall into a deep dark pot hole, searching for amazing finds, to take back home to melbourne. Well nothing much has changed, I still love shopping, the streets are still crazy, however, the foot paths have improved greatly and the shopping has only gotten better and better! Back then Bali used to consist of Sarongs, Singlet’s, Gucci knockoffs and bawdy board shorts, now, thanks to the many talented designers that call this island their home, the streets are lined with the most amazing boutiques, galleries, homewares and furniture stores that will be sure to give that credit card in your pocket a work out.

Some snobby tips: I always shop at night – the majority of the shops are open till 10 every night – yep that’s right 10pm!! And it’s a hell of lot cooler at night than in the heat of the day. The lights from inside the stores shine bright like a beacon – so it’s easier to see what’s inside and you are not wasting your time on things you know you don’t want nor need. Grab a driver – start at the top of Oberoi – work your way down and get him to meet you at the end – hello perfect. Don’t forget some of the little side streets have some of the best boutiques – you don’t want to miss out on these. A great map to get hold of is the one from the Yak magazine, available on line or at the back of each copy of their mag. Wear some comfy footwear and something easy to slip in and out of, as no doubt you will be spending some time in the changing rooms.

So with that said here are some of my favorite places to shop in Seminyak…. Some places i am sure your already know about – some you may not have heard of, but all worth a visit.

Souq is true to its name, a treasure trove of exciting goodies, I always call in there to check out the new and beautiful pieces that fill this huge space. It’s a lifestyle slash concept store and better still has a great cafe – you can drink coffee whilst you shop. Filled with men’s, women’s and children’s clothing – that you will not find anywhere else on the island, along with gorgeous homewares, jewellery and furniture. Call in for a coffee and one their delicious cakes or call in for a shop.

Mecredi Homewares

Think Hamptons, think Parisian Chic, this beautiful store is filled with cushions, furniture, hand made bedding, throws, floor rugs, vases, art and a whole lot more. Their window displays will draw you in and have you wanting to re design your home. Everything here is exquisite and the prices are super reasonable.

 Mercedi Homewares

Prisoners of St Petersburg

This small boutique at the top of Oberoi is packed full of women’s fashion, sunglasses, bags, cushion covers and a whole lot of other fun and quirky pieces. The owner of this store travels the world religiously looking for new and unusual bits and he never disappoints. You will walk in and want to pick up and touch everything. There’s new stuff there’s vintage stuff – I guarantee you will go back to Prisoners a couple of times wondering if you missed something.

Rainbow Ironworks

I love this place – looking for crazy coloured candelabras, wrought iron chairs in bright yellow, an iron table in bright blue – Rainbow ironworks is your place. If they haven’t got it – and it’s made of iron – they can make it for you. Don’t miss this place – even if you’re not looking for furniture – just to take in all the colour.

Rainbow Ironworks

Miss Milne

Miss Milne boutique is full of pieces that I am not going to run into on the island. Her beautiful designs are sold on all the top fashionista websites, should you not be able to make it to Bali and worn by celebs around the world – although you can find the latest collection for a better price here. The tiny details make them special and you will have not for a season but forever. From Glam going out wear to super cute retro inspired resort wear – make sure you seek out the Miss Milne Boutique.

miss milne

Natalie at Peppers

Off the beaten track, but well worth it when you find it, this beautiful boutique stocks international labels like Alice McCall, Sundays Resort Wear, Melissa Odabash swimwear Amber Sceats Jewellery  and Sass and Bide Eyewear, Natalie’s is a perfect place to find your gorgeous stand out in the crowd Potato Head Playsuit or if you love wearing white. Natalie is full of lacey and crochet pieces that will stand out at Seminyak sunset.

Natalie at peppers

Another women’s boutique which stocks the most delicate lace and silk designs – perfect for sultry Seminyak nights and so, so feminine, again these Palma pieces will remain in your wardrobe for years.

Kim Soo

My favorite store has tripled in size !! And added a café so you can sip an iced coffee whilst browsing the array of amazing homewares that fill the shelves in this gorgeous store – Lets face it we all know how I feel about Kim Soo homewares, I have shouted it out to the world a zillion times, read about my addiction to Kim Soo here.

Carga Bali is just next door to Biku and opposite potato head and another store filled with more beautiful Bali / Indonesian inspired homewares to take back home.

Tropicana Shop

This store is super cute and super fun – bikinis, playsuits, tanks and crazy fun tees and as their name suggests all perfect for island holidays. Call into Tropicana Store if you want something fun for your holidays.

Kody and Ko is like a colourful candy store for big kids and small kids.

Bali Boat Shed

You can’t miss the Bali Boat Shed – it’s a brightly coloured row of eye catching boat sheds just down from Motel Mexicola.

Stocking a huge range of local designers – its filled to the max of hipster cool island clothing and accessories for girls and guys. Hats, sunnies, bags and beach wear, well worth a stop in if you are after some casual gear to wear around the yak.

Workshop 13 : Johnny Ramali

Workshop 13 is a must visit on the Seminyak shopping trail. Ramali’s jewellery is like nothing else you will find anywhere on the island – the pieces are so unique, made from oxidized silver, gold and precious stones. The use of religious icons, antique coins as well as other intricate ornaments gives each piece a distinctive feel – it gives the impression that it has been made exclusively for you. Alongside the jewellery cabinets are leatherbags, clutches and a small selection of super cool designer clothing pieces. A must visit.

These are just SOME of my favourite places to shop in Seminyak – i will continue to add to this list – stay tuned

NEW KID ON THE BEACH BLOCK : Finns Beach Club moves to our Hood

Finns Beach Club

I was beyond excited when I heard that Finns Beach Club (previously on the shores in Uluwatu) had decided to relocate to my side of town as much as I loved the old Finns, sometimes driving to Uluwatu in high season traffic really did my head in.  I don’t know about you, but I love a great beach club, and Finns new location at Berawa Beach, just a 10 minute scoot up the road from Seminyak is super easy to get to.

As expected, Finns not only secured the perfect beach side possie, they have improved their concept and is a great way to spend a very lazy day in the sunshine.

This absolute beach front venue is situated on the stunning stretch of  Berawa Beach where you can see surfers catch the famous surf break that this beach is famous for.

The phenomenal  bamboo structure was skilfully designed so no matter where you are sitting you are guaranteed to enjoy the breathtaking view, take the time to look up and look around as this structure is quite simply amazing !!!! and houses the surf bar, the dining area and the very beautiful sunset lounge on the 2nd level – again offering incredible ocean views – this can also be booked for private events.

finns beach club

The pool area is my favourite – there are lounges and day beds everywhere – or if you prefer to sit facing the beach, there are sun loungers lining the front of Finns all facing the ocean – but so close to the pool that you can turn around and quite literally fall in. And of course….. a fabulous the pool bar which is IN THE POOL where the cool Finns waiters shake up the best cocktails.

finns beach club

Sit back, relax, read, sleep, eat – just enjoy your day lounging around the pool and being looked after by the incredibly friendly staff. The pool bar menu is delicious, with a huge choice of all the yummy stuff, tacos, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pastas, and of course all our favourite indo dishes are on the menu, the list does go on – with vegetarian and glutten free options – there is nothing they have not thought of.

finns beach club

Did i hear you say Drinks…. well it wouldn’t be a day out to a beach club if we didn’t participate in a cocktail or …. four. And Finns Barman shake up some good stuff – my favourite the Espresso Martini – is made to perfection. Huge choice here my friends… mocktails, smoothies, juices, sangrias and the wine list is small but includes some great vinos to choose from all at very reasonable prices.

Now sunset here is an absolute must – the uninterrupted 180 degree views ensure that sunsets at Finns are pretty special – with the palm tree’s and the waves – it’s truly picture card perfect.

Finns is such a great spot, this place is child friendly, but so huge that if you are not that way inclined, you wont even know they are there. Every afternoon at 4pm the resident DJ spins some tunes – if you’re in the pool duck you head under the blue water and listen to the underwater speakers. Hello fabulous you never have to miss a beat.

finns beach club

finns beach club

I cannot recommend this place highly enough…. awesome beach club, relaxed, friendly, fun vibe….. you will love it. I will be going back again and again to soak up this sensational new spot.

Finns is open 7 days a week from morning till late at night – contact them here to make a booking

ADDICTED TO PARADISE : Villa Coral Nusa Lembongan

villa coral nusa lembongan

It’s no secret that our go to getaway when we need to escape the silly that sometimes Seminyak is known for is Nusa Lembongan. We are pretty fussy about where we stay returning to our favorites again and again. But this time we thought – lets mix it up and try somewhere completely different. We got in touch with our friends at The Lembongan Traveller, who told us about a brand spanking new beach front villa in a secluded part of the island, so beach front in fact, you have to walk across the white sand to gain entry. Hello – book us in!

villa coral beach front

I must admit I was pretty excited to try some new digs on the island, a change is as good as a holiday, and that’s what we are on Lembongan for. As the Rocky’s Van made its way through the bumpy roads and overgrown foliage we were pretty eager to get to this new villa we had heard so much about – Villa Coral. Pulling up on a narrow road right next to Tamarind Beach – I knew I was staying somewhere absolutely beach front when the waves were lapping at my feet as I was wheeling my luggage as promised thru the white sand to get to Villa Corals entrance. We were not disappointed by what greeted us.

villa coral nusa lembongan

Very large and lovely, modern but in an elegant island style way this villa is cleverly designed so every inch of the bay is captured from every point of this double story villa.

This beach front beauty is tucked away in a private and very quiet part of the island, it’s truly beautiful, with every amenity that you will need during your stay provided for you. With four staff to take care of everything – all you need to do is sit back and do nothing – something I’m very good at.

villa coral nusa lembongan

The villa has 4 enormous, repeat ENORMOUS, air-conditioned bedrooms, each with king size beds and very generous ensuite bathrooms – all bedrooms have views of the beach and bay that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

villa coral nusa lembongan

We spent our days by or I should say laying in the infinity pool taking in the impressive outlook – the star of the show being Mt Agung – which, when he makes an appearance is seen perfectly from every location in this villa.

mount agung villa coral

The poolside bar got a good work out– that impressive stainless steel refrigerator kept our champagne chilled to perfection. The staff were always on hand with menus from local warungs and happily ordered delicious meals for us, collected them and lay out our dishes for us in the beautiful open-air dining area overlooking the pool and the beach.

Breakfast at villa coral is a great way to start your day – the staff cook up a some tasty treats that will keep you full right thru to lunch – so good in fact – we requested 2nd servings (my constant diet was forgotten for this getaway).

breakfast villa coral

This villa is literally on the beach! When the tide comes in – you open the front gate – and the waves almost reach the beautiful stone boundary. A walk along the beach you will find local fisherman untangling their nets whilst their young children play in the rock pools and waves.

At night take in the sunset from the poolside bar – or the view is just as good if not better from the upstairs lounge area.

With an air- conditioned entertainment room that also doubles as a massage room – This villa has everything to ensure your holiday is perfect in every way.

villa coral

There is lots to do on this island paradise, snorkel, explore, etc., but we have been to Lembongan many times before, so we decided just to chillax and enjoy everything that Villa Coral had to offer – that being the peaceful and secluded position – leaving us with the feeling that we had this whole stretch of beach to ourselves.

villa coral

Villa Coral is most certainly a beachfront beauty, a picture perfect position which will ensure your island getaway is as every bit as wonderful as the view it looks out to.

The Lembongan Traveller have this island covered – they can match you and your requirements to the perfect villa and book snorkelling trips, boating trips,  you want to do something – TLT can assist you.

If you haven’t been to Nusa Lembongan – can i suggest you put it on your itinerary next time you visit Bali – only a 30 minute boat ride from Sanur, i can promise you, you will become addicted.

Villa Coral can be booked through The Lembongan Traveller

Beach Club Beauty : Karma

karma beach club

Waking up everyday in paradise is indeed a blessing – so much to see, so much to do, so much to eat, so much to (dare I say) drink. That is the beauty of Bali – every day is an adventure and you are never ever stuck for things to do, see, experience or explore.

Today we decided to take the windey road that leads to Uluwatu and spend a day at Karma Beach Club – I mean lets face it, who wouldn’t want to spend the day laying on sun loungers, soaking up the sun and watching those waves barrel in.

The drive there can sometimes be a pain in the butt, however once you arrive – it is worth every bit of it.

Positioned on what is known as the Bukit Peninsula, Karma Kandra also offers luxury cliff top villa accommodation, but the beach club is open to all – best you book a day bed in advance – especially in the high season. Be sure to join the Karma Club before you go – as you get (i think) 20% off all food and beverage when you visit – hello = thank you karma.

When you arrive you will be literally awestruck by the view that greets you! Situated on a cliff overlooking the spectacular Indian Ocean– you will no doubt be wondering how in the hell you are going to get down to the beach – don’t freak out, there are not 10,00o steps to tire you out,  but an inclinator that travels down the face of the cliff providing an awe-inspiring ride and stunning views of the ocean and the limestone cliffs that surround this impressive region. Get your camera out !!!

karma beach club

Karma Beach is truly breathtaking, we can see why it was named one of the Worlds 50 best beach bars by CNN Travel – private and tucked away from everything – you feel like you have arrived at your own beachside oasis.

karma beach club

karma beach club

The gorgeous staff will show you to your sun loungers, each with a beach towel and shaded by large umbrella’s, they will bring you a menu and the all important cocktail list – and from there your day will only get better.

The ocean is so blue – you will want to dive on in straight away – but please note – the waves and current here can be risky, and the rocks in some parts of this beach can be slippery and sharp – so be sure to maneuver you way thru safely. Or do what we do – bring those ugly reef walker shoes – not very flattering – but you will thank me later.

Screen Shot 2016-04-30 at 11.59.17 AM

The large open air, thatched roof beach hut style restaurant provides a tasty and generous asian & Mediterranean themed menu, and trust me the chefs here do it well. Pizzas, Pastas, Seafood, Sushi and Sashimi – there is so much on this menu that we wanted to try. We went for the seafood paella, which was scrumptious, the prawns fresh, large and delicious and the greek salad perfect.

karma beach club

karma lunch

It wouldn’t be a day out if we didn’t participate in a few cocktails – and like their food menu there is so lots too chose from – and the barman didn’t disappoint, the frozen ginger martini, the karma spritz and the all time favourite espresso martinis are all to made to perfection.

cocktails at karma

Lay back for the rest of the afternoon, perhaps get a massage under the shaded bales, or if the tide is out wander further up the beach and take in the beauty of this part of the island, if you have young children with you,  the Three Monkeys Kids Club will be happy to help, leaving you to enjoy some quiet time, or cocktail time.

karma beach club

Don’t want to leave ? You can continue well into the evening, with dinner served on the beach (tide permitting) or dine at Di Mare their stunning restaurant at the top of the cliff overlooking their pool and views out onto the indian ocean – be sure to try their vanilla martini !

Screen Shot 2016-04-30 at 11.35.37 AM

And……there is always the luxe Karma Villas if your driver got tired of waiting for you and you need somewhere amazing to stay.

The Karma Group are currently expanding – and offering luxury accommodation and beach clubs at exotic locations all over the world. If your travelling further than bali – be sure to look out for them.

Everything – and I mean everything about Karma Beach Club is quite simply Magical – The sand is golden and the ocean is blue – this is your Karma – sit back and enjoy your day.

Snob notes :

situated approx 45 minutes drive from seminyak

Entrance fee: IDR 350,000 including IDR 150.000 Food and Beverage credit.

STARTING THE DAY OFF RIGHT : Breakfast in the Yak

Our hood is known for its amazing restaurants, places where you wine and dine at night whilst watching the sunset, well you may or may not know it – but some of these places actually serve up some of the best breakies  that you will ever taste, and better still all at a fraction of the price that you will get at home.

Often  when you book your accommodation breakfast is included, like the resort style  buffet, where you have to stand in line waiting whilst the guy in front of you picks over the best pieces of bacon, or maybe you are staying at a private villa where they cook up the standard “American”  breakfast  (yawn) . Tip – take your accommodation without breakfast (it will save you money) and get out and try some of the incredible places you have more than likely heard about and probably seen on social media.

Seminyak is full of them – enough great places to have you eating the most important meal of the day somewhere different for your 10 day vacay.

Here are some of our favourites :

cafe organic

This place has rocketed to breakfast stardom over the last 6 months – purely because what they do is delicious, fresh and healthy. The menu is full of amazingness offering plates that scream good for you. The smoothie bowls make a great start to any day and come served in a coconut – too cute, that along with a green juice and top it off with a coconut milk latte , even if your not that healthy, you will feel it after that. If you want something bigger and badder for breakfast – two words Breakfast Criminal, this number comes stacked high to the sky with loads of tasty goodness and topped off with two poached eggs. YUM. And the aptly named Big Breakfast is enough to fill the emptiest of tummies. For lunch give the veggie burger a go or get stuck in to a salad, topped off with a smoothie, you will be full for hours.

We love everything about the Petitenget Breakfast, offering specials that change up daily, the breakfast is big and always comes served with a smile – my personal favourite is the Green Eggs and Ham I want to inhale it the minute it lands on the table. Chef Simon sources locally organic grown produce and you can taste it. The breakfast offering is large and has something for everyone, Granolas, The Gadang Breakfast Salad, Glutton Free Mashed Avo, Blueberry Pancakes – The juices are fab and land on the table  in a minature jug that you pour yourself (cute) and the coffee is just like back home.

breakfast sea circus

We adore this bright, fun, laidback and vibrant café !  Sea Circus do a great lunch and dinner, but their breakfast will keep you coming back each morning. No beach views here but what they put on the plate should keep your eyes and your tummy satisfied. The pesto eggs gets me every time but the dragon bowl served with granola, frozen dragon fruit, mango, banana and coconut water topped with a rainbow of fresh fruit is filling and tastes so healthy. Feeling a bit shady after last nights big one? Well Sea Circus have the perfect cure – The Happy Hangover Meal – served with a Berocca and a neck massage if required – hello brilliant! The staff are chirpy and very patient as you peruse the menu trying to decide what to try. Coffee is fab and their fresh juices are served super chilled.

Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 10.56.11 AM

Yes – I kid you not, these guys are open morning, noon and night – and Breakfast at the KU is made even tastier whilst looking out over the waves crashing down on Seminyak beach. The menu is small but is full of tasty selections, smashed avo (add a poached egg or two and a side of mushrooms), the breakfast burrito and the corn and zucchini fritters are favorites, and they even have a menu dedicated for the kids. A great choice of juices and smoothies – coffee is okay, there is better out there, but the food and outlook will help you forget about your caffeine addiction. Bring your bathers – as no doubt you will end up staying for the day and the pool is too pretty to say no to.

Another restaurant known for its amazing Italian dishes served up in the evening– but did you know La Lucciola is open for breakfast ? No – well you do now. We LOVE eating breakfast at La louch – not only for its perfect pre noon food – but because this beautiful eatery looks impressive during the day – not a wall in sight, this huge open restaurant looks out onto the gorgeous large green lawn stretching out onto the beach – you will be in heaven. Request a table on the first floor – views spectacular and you will appreciate the breeze coming in off the beach. Dishing up your more traditional breakfast fares – eggs benedict, hash browns, etc, you will find yourself sitting here for hours sipping on lattes or their fresh fruit granitas which will cool anyone down on a hot Seminyak morning.

Revolver Hidden just off oberoi and sometimes hard to find – but dont give up – this cool kids hangout is where its at, so popular, they have extended their café so to fit more of their devotees. Love the menu here not only for the deliciousness on offer – but for the names of the dishes ! The Smith & Wesson, the Double Barrel and of course the Revolver are must try’s – packed with yumminess – you wont need to eat again till dinner ! Loads of sides on offer if whats on your plate is not enough. Everything here is GOOD. I Love every single thing on the menu and better still – Hands Down – best coffee on the island, this shabby chic café serves up the good stuff.

There are so many amazing places here, some others to try, Shelter, Grocer & Grind, Watercress, Crate Cafe, Milk & Madu… the list just goes on. Next time your in town, make sure you skip the breakfast option at the hotel….. and give some of these gems a try ! Start your day right.

flores, komodo, island hopping

Do you find yourself day dreaming about travelling to an island paradise with no cars, no parking inspectors, no kids, no nothing but sunshine, crystal clear water, white sand, pink sand and palm trees? Of course you do – who doesn’t? Well let me fill you in on a little secret, you will find all that and a whole lot more on the island of Flores and the stunningly gorgeous islands that surround it.

This picture perfect island is a 1hour flight away from Bali and well worth a trip if you can afford the time. Garuda and Lion Air fly there daily so its super easy to get to once your in Bali.

flores, island hopping Make sure you book a window seat because as the plane descends and makes its way to Labuan Bajo Airport – you will not believe the blue waters that lay beneath you, with islands scattered as far as the eye can see. Stunning I tell you – S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G.

Flores is Indonesia’s “Next Big Thing” and it’s easy to see why. Many long time expats of Bali have made the move over as this picturesque paradise reminds them of the Bali that they knew 20 years ago. Peaceful, pretty and perfect. It  is a gorgeous and fascinating island where you can swim & snorkel in the pristine waters – I have been lucky enough to visit Flores 3 times and each time is better than the last.

We base ourselves at the Jayakarta Labuan Bajo – which is a big old style resort about 5 minutes from the center of town, it is by no means a luxurious resort – but perfectly positioned with huge big comfortable rooms all with balconies overlooking the Flores sea and with all the modern day amenities that you could possibly need.

More and more eateries keep popping up but our favorites are Mediterraneo Inn which overlooks the harbor and is one of the more popular places in town, serving up delicious pasta’s, pizzas, and seafood, this place is great for dining or just hanging out and enjoying a cool cocktail or a cold beer.

Another must try is Made In Italy – delicious homemade pasta and other Italian dishes and a fantastic wine list – open for lunch and dinner this café / restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

flores, island hopping, snorkelling Once a small fishing village, Labuan Bagjo in Flores is now a bustling epicenter of tourism as word gets out about how beautiful this island is. Labuan Bajo (Flores) is the perfect base for the diving and sailing boats all leaving regularly for trips to Komodo Island, which is famous for the Komodo Dragons and nearby Seraya island which is fabulous for diving and snorkeling.

You will see scattered throughout the port huge big Penisi’s which are available for hire for a couple of days or a week or two – get a group of friends together and do it – you will think you have died and landed in heaven.

We get the hotel to negotiate with one of the smaller operators in town to take us out on day trips and depending on your negotiating skills usually costs about $60 – $100 per person – please be aware that for this price you are not chartering a luxury cruiser – these boats are basic – but that’s all you need. Pack up a picnic or ask the boat owner to fill the boat with beer and soft drinks and food for you. It’s a fun adventure that you will remember forever.

flores, crystal clear water

Once you cruise thru the harbor, the water gets bluer and bluer by the minute and you will see islands scattered everywhere all surrounded by white sand and palms. The boat will stop at islands allowing you to get off and take in the stunning scenery and snorkel in the crystal clear waters – they can all organize snorkels, flippers, etc. for you.

Be sure to add Komodo Island to your day trip – the world’s largest lizard, the Komodo Dragon, is found in  this national park. These crazy prehistoric looking creatures can grow up to 3m long and yes, can be deadly if you get too close. But don’t stress, you will have a park ranger to trek the island with and he knows all the spots to take you and will explain the fascinating history as you walk behind him, carrying a big stick (just in case a Komodo dragon should pop past) and I can promise you – you will spot Komodos on your way thru. A once in a lifetime opportunity that cannot be missed.

Komodo also is home to the famous Pink beach – yes people – pink sand like you will never see again in your life. They are best seen in the morning and later in the afternoon as if the sun is too bright – the sand appears more white than Pink, there are only 7 Pink Sand beaches in the world – and Indonesia has 2 of them – how lucky are we !

Each island just gets prettier and prettier and you will want to stop at each and every one and wonder around – kind of wishing that you could be stranded there forever – as long as someone could drop off food and wine to you on a daily basis of course.

There are multitude of luxury boats to cruise around on – check out The Luxury Bali they represent a host of super yachts as well as gorgeous old style Penisi’s or if your budget doesn’t stretch that far – look into Le Pirate Explorer which is just about start operating out of Flores.

And of course, it goes without saying that the sunsets are pretty spesh – be sure to make your way to the Sunset Bar at the top of the big hill, grab something cold and watch what takes place – i know i use this word all the time – but it is truly spectacular.

Slowly starting to become busier, Flores provides an incredible adventure for those looking to slow down and get away from their crazy city life. This island escape will provide you with lifelong memories.

Scrolling thru your instagram feed and spotted beaches that you cannot believe are found in Bali? Well let me tell you something – they do exist and they are incredible! Bali is chock-full of beaches that scream AMAZING – some are just a short scooter ride away and some are worthy of 2 night getaways and many of them are so secret you may never be able to find them.

Pandawa Beach is very worthy of a day trip; it has just recently become quite popular, as word has spread about this amazing long stretch of white sand and crystal clear blue water.

This place is old school Bali – no Starbucks or circle k’s in sight, just beach umbrellas and sarong sellers as far as the eye can see.

Getting there can be a bit of schlep. As you drive down winding roads that you think lead to nowhere, but believe me once you reach the descent  in that road that leads to the start of this stretch of paradise you will know you have arrived somewhere.

When you first hit the car park – you may spot many big busses – but don’t despair – get off your scooter and head down to the paved path take a right and keep walking, you will see lots of “tin sheds” all housing warungs selling the yummiest and freshest local food, gado gado, satays, nasi goreng and lots more. The brightly coloured loungers can be “rented” for the day all shaded by big beach umbrella’s protecting you from the hot hot sun.
