ULUWATU INDULGENCE : The Ungasan Clifftop Resort

the ungasan

Are you on Instagram and follow the bazillions of Bali bloggers taking pictures in paradise. Well if you are, I am sure you have seen the amazing shots, all with hash tags like #uluwatu #bluepoint #sulubanbeach #singlefin, etc, etc, and wished that it was you there on the cliff tops looking out at that big blue ocean holding a coconut in your hand. Uluwatu –  it truly is a magical spot, situated at the southernmost tip of south Bali and filled with the most picturesque luxury villas and resorts, nearly all of them sitting on the towering limestone cliffs facing the glistening waters of the Indian ocean.

With most of the islands 5 star property’s all situated in this region – the choice of which property to stay at can sometimes be hard. Let the Snobs step in and help you out here – just recently we decided a mini vacay to Uluwatu was in order – and (like you) had seen so many beautiful pictures, but liked what we saw of The Ungasan on Instagram and promptly decided this is where we wanted to be.

the ungasan

Bags packed, blue bird taxi booked we were quietly excited to be heading to the Ungasan to see for ourselves this stunning picturesque place.

Pulling up to the entrance of this extremely impressive property, we were greeted by the gorgeous staff all welcoming us to the Ungasan – walking through to the reception area – it is then that you are overwhelmed by the beauty of this villa style resort. Nothing but green grass stretches out in front of you, then disappears down the cliff face and than you are greeted with the panoramic view of the big blue of the ocean.

The Ungasan

The Ungasan offers 7 unique villas, all architecturally designed tropical style and all overlooking the ocean. 5 of the villas can sleep up to 10 guests. We stayed in Villa Chintamani, which can sleep up to 14 guests – all bedrooms have a private plunge pool, bale and garden decking and a humungous but romantic master bedroom, a gorgeous bathroom with a bathtub big enough to swim in. The beauty of this property is even though Villa Chintamani offers 7 completely private bedrooms all separated by lush tropical gardens, it can be booked as a 1 bedroom, meaning you get to stay in a lux villa compound but only have to book 1 of the bedrooms. Brilliant! Villa Chintamani like the other 7 villas sits on the cliff top and faces the ocean – with a super long beautiful infinity pool which can be used by the other guests staying in Chintamani, dreamy comfy day beds, a million dollar view, and a butler to take care of your every need – you will have to pinch yourself to make sure you are not actually dreaming.

the ungasan

Chintamani offers plenty,  boasting 24 hour room service, nanny service (need to book) private butler, full bar service, private chef (upon request) car and driver, Wi-Fi, garden and cliff edge bale’s. The luxury is really laid on, I found it so easy to do absolutely nothing but take in the beauty that surrounded this gorgeous Balinese compound.

The Ungasan offers everything you can imagine – so you might think about leaving to explore the area … but with everything there at your fingertips, or the butler’s fingertips, I doubt you will want to leave.

Sundays Beach Club is a 3 minutes breathtaking inclinator ride down the cliff face and provides a stunning beach on par with anything I have seen anywhere in the world. White sand, crystal clear blue waters, cocktails, day beds, bean bags, a fantastic food menu, smiling staff to look after you, paddle boards, it literally has everything – and if you get bored of sitting around your private pool – well this makes an exciting and fun change. Even though Sunday’s is open to everyone, Resort guests get priority over day-trippers, which is fantastic.

Sunsets here are spectacular as you literally have a front row seat to the nightly show – whether you decide to take it in from Sundays beach club or your villa – be assured – this is a must do for every evening you spend at the Ungasan.

Dinner at Selatun is a great experience; this beautiful restaurant sits at the top of the cliff taking in the spectacular view. The chef does a great job with western and of course local cuisine and I can assure you the cocktails are shaken to perfection.

With a tennis court, putting green, spa, and restaurant – this place is pure perfection. Everything is there for you and if its not – speak to Indra, the ever helpful Guest Services Manager – he can make magic happen.

Looking to spoil yourself at a Lust after cliff top resort (of course your are) Us snobs can highly upon highly recommend The Ungasan for that special sweet getaway and there is no better time to book as at Nov / Dec 2016 The Ungasan are celebrating their 5th birthday and offering 35% off all bookings when placed directly thru them.

GETTING MY SUFER SIDE ON : Komune Beach Club

Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 2.13.54 PM

A 45 minute drive from Seminyak (well okay can be 60 minutes in bad traffic) is a blissfully beautiful stretch of beach known very well to surfers from around the world called Keramas.

The word is slowly getting out about this surfer’s paradise and as a result accommodation is slowly popping up in and around this picturesque area, one of which is the magnificent Komune Beach Club & Resort.

I was looking for a new beach club to try and the photos I had seen of Komune totally captivated me – this stunningly beautiful resort is set on 180 metres of private lawns and gardens in amongst the 100’s of coconut trees and a total beach front property – where you witness every super sized snobby wave barrel on in.

Komune Resort Bali

As I made my way down the tropical lush pathway that lead from the carpark to the beach club – I was in total amazement of the magnificent stretch of Keramas beach, the photos I had seen did not do this place justice, WHAT – Why had I not been here before ?? I definitely have to get out of Seminyak more.

We grabbed a lounge right next to the beautiful bluer than blue and rounder than round beachside pool which was totally surrounded by day beds, bean bags and umbrellas to help shade you from the intense afternoon sunshine. This place has such a chilled, relaxed, party vibe – tunes were playing, waves were crashing, kids were swimming, suffers were taking on the gigantic waves, the staff were being incredibly helpful and their service was incredibly fantastic. I knew it was going to be a great day – and I was not disappointed.

Paddleboards and snorkels are on hand for when the tide goes out allowing you to explore the rock pools and crystal clear lagoons. And of course – if you surf, this venue could not be more perfect for you – it’s a match made in heaven.

Komune Resort Bali

At night Komune has an outdoor beachside cinema showcasing weekly surfing events, highlights from the days or weeks surfing are shown on the big screen as well as regular screenings of latest release movies

Hungry? (silly question) this incredible beachside structure houses a restaurant and bar both providing some amazingly good food choices, healthy salads, juices, burgers, pizzas along with some pretty delicious seafood. You will not go hungry here – with something on the menu to satisfy everyone. The cocktails are pretty awesome too all served with a huge big Balinese smile.

Komune Resort Bali

When it came time to head back to the Yak, I have to be honest – I just did not want to leave, I felt totally at home here and the view that was laid out right in front of me was totally hypnotic – I hadn’t felt this chilled in a long time.

Komune Resort Bali

Komune Resort & Beach Club has so much to offer, you dont have to be a full time surfer to enjoy it here,  the hotel has a range of rooms, suites and villas which cater to everyone’s budget, along with a health “hub” a well equipped fitness centre and yoga retreat, long lap pool along with a day spa – there is not one reason you have to leave this resort after you arrive. Not knowing much about Komune when I visited, I can tell you I made it my priority to find out more once I arrived – this place is heaven. Now I have visited for the day – I am going to make it another priority to go back – but next time – I will definitely be staying for a couple of days to experience the hospitality that Komune is so obviously well known for. I would even go as far to say – skip Seminyak, get off the plane and head straight here for your holiday. I have no doubt that you will walk away feeling more relaxed than ever before.

If your heading for the day – be sure to phone ahead and let them know your coming, as very often they are booked out for weddings, etc. I mean really – why wouldn’t you want to get married here. What a great place to start the rest of your life together with the one you love.

I cannot recommend Komune highly enough and I cannot wait to get back again – but next time – I will be staying for a couple of days not a couple of hours. They may have trouble getting me to leave.

On a side note – my partners son left his ipad on one of the day beds, he did not tell us about this until the next day…. We called Komune, and yes his ipad had been found and was locked away – we are grateful to the wonderful staff at Komune for this.

RESORT LIFE : Sofitel Nusa Dua

Screen Shot 2016-02-27 at 12.10.48 PM

After something a little bit quieter than the craziness and commotion in Seminyak, well Nusa Dua is most definately the place for you. Well known for its white sand beaches, blue waters and enclave of five star resorts it is the perfect place for honeymooners and families alike.

One of our favourites and we head there often for a snobby weekend getaway is The Sofitel Nusa Dua. This luxury beach front properly has everything you could imagine to ensure you will be kept happy in  every way.  She’s a big one, surrounded by lush and green tropical gardens  it offers 415 guest rooms, including 22 suites and 17 Villas as well as 2 restaurants, 2 bars, a beach club, a well appointed gym, a stunning spa, Vietura Aesthetic Centre and a kids club.

The pool here is massive, it goes on forever, the minute i arrive i drop my bags and make my way to one of the comfy loungers that actually sit in the water, grab a waiter, order a cocktail and settle into my book, whilst taking in the coming and goings on around  me. The swim up pool bar is a genius  and a hive of activity – i love it when you dont have to actually leave the cool confines of the pool to participate in a beverage.  I am in love with this pool – its so big and there are gazillions of poolside loungers meaning you wont have to deal with sitting in the back blocks should you wander down for a swim and a sun bake later than everyone else at the resort.

Screen Shot 2016-02-27 at 12.11.56 PM

So much to do here if working on your tan is not a priority, grab one of the hotel bikes and take a ride along the bike path which runs all along nusa dua beach past all the resorts, all the waters sports are a 5 minute walk away, jet ski’s, banana boats, snorkelling, parasailing, its all here and great fun. Feeling like a bit of a massage, well the So Spa is amazing – the girls here will have you floating on air after a 1 hours massage – and i guarantee it will become a daily ritual. Vietura spa can also provide a mini makeover and leave you looking younger than when you walked in the door.

Screen Shot 2016-02-27 at 12.41.28 PM

The rooms are stunning, spacious and sleek with all the amenities that you need, the beds are like sleeping on clouds and if you book a swim up room, you may never have to leave your suite.

Warning : You may leave weighing slightly more heavier than when you arrived and you can blame that on the 2 amazing restaurants which serve up gastronomic amazingness daily. The world famous Nikki Beach Club is attached to the resort and offers another option of wining, dining and swimming – head over there on a sunday – when the place really comes alive, with DJ’s, champagne flowing and lots of ladies and lads strutting around in tiny swimmers showing of their suntanned bodies.

The beach is beautiful and is provides a more peaceful place to relax if the action around the huge pool is getting to loud and you need a snooze – waiter service on the beach will ensure you glass is never empty.

And the great thing about the Sofitel Nusa Dua is that it is only a short 30 minute drive to Seminyak if you are need of some retail therapy.

Highly recommend this fabulous resort to singles, couples, families, everyone will love it.
