villa sayang

It was that time again, the time when a little weekend escape was needed and given that the Seminyak silly season was all set to start I thought it was the perfect time to head to Lembongan to relax, refresh and recharge my slightly worn down battery.

That was the easy decision; the hard decision (as always) was which fabulously new and amazing villa should we stay at, my list of must haves is always long and I can (sometimes) be very, very picky – the only peeps that know my list of needs is the team at The Lembongan Traveller, the Lembongan experts.

villa sayang

Villa Sayang was strongly suggested, and I have to say I was hesitant at first, as it wasn’t in the exact area where I really really love to stay and it wasn’t a brand new modern slash contemporary style villa. But…. then it was explained to me, it had its own boat (hello), its own private beach (oooh now that sounds nice) a full time team to look after everything (ummm even better) and its own private chef that cooks better than Jamie Oliver (okay im in).

villa sayang

Arriving on Lembongan we were greeted by the team from Villa Sayang… where they loaded our bags, and us onto their very own boat, we were whisked off to Tamarind Beach – which is where Villa Sayang sits regally, high above overlooking the crystal clear surrounding waters.

villa sayang

The gorgeous staff proudly showed us around, and I was overwhelmed not only by its majestic old style Bali beauty but how immense this property is – it literally went on and on forever.

Secluded and beachfront, Villa Sayang is nothing short of exquisite, spread over 2 tiers, this property is truly lush tropical oasis, featuring not 1 but 2 infinity edge swimming pools, 100m of ocean frontage, its own private beach, gorgeous green manicured gardens, 6 beautiful air-conditioned bedrooms all with private ensuites, these are just a few of the 5 star features that this villa has to offer.

villa sayang

The bottom tier is a sanctuary in itself featuring 2 stunning bedrooms overlooking tamarind beach all facing onto the infinity pool, and a family / dining area sitting under a huge open living bale as big as a ballroom.

villa sayang

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I made my way up the winding white lava stone staircase and reached the upper level where the main villa sits …. It’s then you realize how large this property is – a double story pavilion housing 4 more super sized bedrooms all with their own private tropical style ensuite, each have massive balconies overlooking the bluer than blue bay. There’s another infinity edge pool with more sparkling views, a dining / relaxing outdoor bale and a huge family / tv area. I was blown away with how gorgeous this villa is and it had me appreciating all over again the beautiful old style Balinese architecture – with thatched roofs, open style living so you can actually take in all the beauty that surrounds you.

villa sayang

Relaxing here is made pretty easy, you literally feel like you are in your own private retreat, peaceful and so very very pretty, its easy to do nothing here except chill and forget all the crazy that may be happening back home. There is a dedicated massage room where a talented masseuse can roll out all the tension that may be laying in your limbs. Or perhaps your are up for a surf? A stand up paddle ? A snorkel ? Villa Sayang has all the equipment right there ready for you to use. Their Private beach is pristine, the perfect place to take a bottle of wine, a towel and a book and hide on the white sand for the afternoon.

villa sayang

The Sayang staff are nothing short of amazing, smiling, funny and so polite, they really are fabulous – all getting their jobs done with out ever “getting in your way”, nothing was ever a problem, pulling out the SUP boards, preparing the boat for snorkeling, making us a G&T, picking up a take away hot chocolate from The Deck. And of course the Chef… well she most certainly knocked our socks off. Nasi Goreng, Stir Fried Noodles, Chicken Salad, Thai Green Curry …. No wonder I went home 3 kilos heavier. This lady could cook up anything within a minutes notice and I cannot even begin to tell you how delicious her dishes were.

villa sayang

villa sayangWe had planned on heading out for dinner in fact we had plans to hire a scooter and do all the usual things we love to do when on Lembongan, but why bother, when you have the perfect paradise with everything you need right at your fingertips.

I was really impressed with the attention to detail that Villa Sayang paid to the little things, L’Occitane products, hair dryers, kimono’s, beautiful, white linen, cable tv, flowers, magazines, the list goes on. The Bedrooms are large and the beds so comfy.

villa sayang

It’s a perfect family holiday villa – with so much space you can send the kids up to the lower level area and not even hear them, an ideal place to celebrate that special occasion, wedding, 40th, engagement, whatever your celebration may be – these guys have the space and the staff to ensure that they can accommodate anything.

Also this 5 star villa offers a 5 star pick up service from Sanur – yes … if you have a group of 6 or more and are staying longer than 3 nights – the Villa Sayang team will pick you up on their private boat and whisk you over the blue waters where you will land beach front right in front of the villa. So very very VIP.

villa sayang

We absolutely adored our stay at Villa Sayang – everything was perfect. Thank you to the Lembongan Traveller for introducing us to this magnificent villa and thank you to Villa Sayang for having us – it is most certainly the closest thing on earth to paradise.

This villa may not be the newest on the island but it is most certainly the grandest.

NEW KID ON THE BEACH BLOCK : Finns Beach Club moves to our Hood

Finns Beach Club

I was beyond excited when I heard that Finns Beach Club (previously on the shores in Uluwatu) had decided to relocate to my side of town as much as I loved the old Finns, sometimes driving to Uluwatu in high season traffic really did my head in.  I don’t know about you, but I love a great beach club, and Finns new location at Berawa Beach, just a 10 minute scoot up the road from Seminyak is super easy to get to.

As expected, Finns not only secured the perfect beach side possie, they have improved their concept and is a great way to spend a very lazy day in the sunshine.

This absolute beach front venue is situated on the stunning stretch of  Berawa Beach where you can see surfers catch the famous surf break that this beach is famous for.

The phenomenal  bamboo structure was skilfully designed so no matter where you are sitting you are guaranteed to enjoy the breathtaking view, take the time to look up and look around as this structure is quite simply amazing !!!! and houses the surf bar, the dining area and the very beautiful sunset lounge on the 2nd level – again offering incredible ocean views – this can also be booked for private events.

finns beach club

The pool area is my favourite – there are lounges and day beds everywhere – or if you prefer to sit facing the beach, there are sun loungers lining the front of Finns all facing the ocean – but so close to the pool that you can turn around and quite literally fall in. And of course….. a fabulous the pool bar which is IN THE POOL where the cool Finns waiters shake up the best cocktails.

finns beach club

Sit back, relax, read, sleep, eat – just enjoy your day lounging around the pool and being looked after by the incredibly friendly staff. The pool bar menu is delicious, with a huge choice of all the yummy stuff, tacos, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pastas, and of course all our favourite indo dishes are on the menu, the list does go on – with vegetarian and glutten free options – there is nothing they have not thought of.

finns beach club

Did i hear you say Drinks…. well it wouldn’t be a day out to a beach club if we didn’t participate in a cocktail or …. four. And Finns Barman shake up some good stuff – my favourite the Espresso Martini – is made to perfection. Huge choice here my friends… mocktails, smoothies, juices, sangrias and the wine list is small but includes some great vinos to choose from all at very reasonable prices.

Now sunset here is an absolute must – the uninterrupted 180 degree views ensure that sunsets at Finns are pretty special – with the palm tree’s and the waves – it’s truly picture card perfect.

Finns is such a great spot, this place is child friendly, but so huge that if you are not that way inclined, you wont even know they are there. Every afternoon at 4pm the resident DJ spins some tunes – if you’re in the pool duck you head under the blue water and listen to the underwater speakers. Hello fabulous you never have to miss a beat.

finns beach club

finns beach club

I cannot recommend this place highly enough…. awesome beach club, relaxed, friendly, fun vibe….. you will love it. I will be going back again and again to soak up this sensational new spot.

Finns is open 7 days a week from morning till late at night – contact them here to make a booking

flores, komodo, island hopping

Do you find yourself day dreaming about travelling to an island paradise with no cars, no parking inspectors, no kids, no nothing but sunshine, crystal clear water, white sand, pink sand and palm trees? Of course you do – who doesn’t? Well let me fill you in on a little secret, you will find all that and a whole lot more on the island of Flores and the stunningly gorgeous islands that surround it.

This picture perfect island is a 1hour flight away from Bali and well worth a trip if you can afford the time. Garuda and Lion Air fly there daily so its super easy to get to once your in Bali.

flores, island hopping Make sure you book a window seat because as the plane descends and makes its way to Labuan Bajo Airport – you will not believe the blue waters that lay beneath you, with islands scattered as far as the eye can see. Stunning I tell you – S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G.

Flores is Indonesia’s “Next Big Thing” and it’s easy to see why. Many long time expats of Bali have made the move over as this picturesque paradise reminds them of the Bali that they knew 20 years ago. Peaceful, pretty and perfect. It  is a gorgeous and fascinating island where you can swim & snorkel in the pristine waters – I have been lucky enough to visit Flores 3 times and each time is better than the last.

flores, indonesia, islands

We base ourselves at the Jayakarta Labuan Bajo – which is a big old style resort about 5 minutes from the center of town, it is by no means a luxurious resort – but perfectly positioned with huge big comfortable rooms all with balconies overlooking the Flores sea and with all the modern day amenities that you could possibly need.

Screen Shot 2016-03-11 at 12.01.10 PM

More and more eateries keep popping up but our favorites are Mediterraneo Inn which overlooks the harbor and is one of the more popular places in town, serving up delicious pasta’s, pizzas, and seafood, this place is great for dining or just hanging out and enjoying a cool cocktail or a cold beer.

Another must try is Made In Italy – delicious homemade pasta and other Italian dishes and a fantastic wine list – open for lunch and dinner this café / restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

flores, island hopping, snorkelling Once a small fishing village, Labuan Bagjo in Flores is now a bustling epicenter of tourism as word gets out about how beautiful this island is. Labuan Bajo (Flores) is the perfect base for the diving and sailing boats all leaving regularly for trips to Komodo Island, which is famous for the Komodo Dragons and nearby Seraya island which is fabulous for diving and snorkeling.

You will see scattered throughout the port huge big Penisi’s which are available for hire for a couple of days or a week or two – get a group of friends together and do it – you will think you have died and landed in heaven.

We get the hotel to negotiate with one of the smaller operators in town to take us out on day trips and depending on your negotiating skills usually costs about $60 – $100 per person – please be aware that for this price you are not chartering a luxury cruiser – these boats are basic – but that’s all you need. Pack up a picnic or ask the boat owner to fill the boat with beer and soft drinks and food for you. It’s a fun adventure that you will remember forever.

flores, crystal clear water

Once you cruise thru the harbor, the water gets bluer and bluer by the minute and you will see islands scattered everywhere all surrounded by white sand and palms. The boat will stop at islands allowing you to get off and take in the stunning scenery and snorkel in the crystal clear waters – they can all organize snorkels, flippers, etc. for you.

Be sure to add Komodo Island to your day trip – the world’s largest lizard, the Komodo Dragon, is found in  this national park. These crazy prehistoric looking creatures can grow up to 3m long and yes, can be deadly if you get too close. But don’t stress, you will have a park ranger to trek the island with and he knows all the spots to take you and will explain the fascinating history as you walk behind him, carrying a big stick (just in case a Komodo dragon should pop past) and I can promise you – you will spot Komodos on your way thru. A once in a lifetime opportunity that cannot be missed.

komodo dragon, flores

Komodo also is home to the famous Pink beach – yes people – pink sand like you will never see again in your life. They are best seen in the morning and later in the afternoon as if the sun is too bright – the sand appears more white than Pink, there are only 7 Pink Sand beaches in the world – and Indonesia has 2 of them – how lucky are we !

Each island just gets prettier and prettier and you will want to stop at each and every one and wonder around – kind of wishing that you could be stranded there forever – as long as someone could drop off food and wine to you on a daily basis of course.

There are multitude of luxury boats to cruise around on – check out The Luxury Bali they represent a host of super yachts as well as gorgeous old style Penisi’s or if your budget doesn’t stretch that far – look into Le Pirate Explorer which is just about start operating out of Flores.

And of course, it goes without saying that the sunsets are pretty spesh – be sure to make your way to the Sunset Bar at the top of the big hill, grab something cold and watch what takes place – i know i use this word all the time – but it is truly spectacular.

flores, komodo, sunset

Slowly starting to become busier, Flores provides an incredible adventure for those looking to slow down and get away from their crazy city life. This island escape will provide you with lifelong memories.

Snob Tip : Don’t Miss It !!

seminyak beach, alila, sunshine

Want some where spesh to hang with your significant other away from the Doof Doof and smell of Hawaiian Tropic? Well a day, a night or a week at the Alila Seminyak may be just what you need if you are wanting to add a capital R into your romantic holiday. You will want to kiss your partner long and hard as soon as you walk thru the striking entrance of this beautiful ocean front resort – this place reeks of romance and love.

seminyak beach, alila,

Comprising of 240 ocean or garden facing rooms and suites that surround a vast communal area,  Alila Seminyak contains 4 bluer than blue swimming pools that look right out onto the sparkling indian ocean – this resort is first class all the way. The hotel is shrouded in vertical gardens, leafy plants and a gorgeous green lawn that rolls on down to the beach interrupted only by a tranquil Balinese temple – you are right in the heart of Seminyak but the peace and calm takes over you the minute you walk down those steps onto the lawn looking onto the beach, the beautiful big pools and the dramatic beach bar – everything so strategically placed that doesn’t matter where you sit you are able to see all the goings on.

alila seminyak, penthouse, resort

We head down to the Alila often to get away from the continual interruptions taking place at our villa. This is the most perfect peaceful place to lay and enjoy the beautiful surrounds, sip a cocktail, read, swim and enjoy the delicious pool menu.

alila seminyak cocktail

With its prime beach front position – it’s a given that the Alila is a perfect spot for a romantic sunset, and even better,  it doesn’t get quite so busy here and even if it did you wouldn’t notice because there is so much room to take in the show – that there is no possibility that anyone is going to get in your way.

alila seminyak beach bali

Get there early, make a day of it, lay yourself down on one of their oversized loungers or if you prefer the shade, grab a seat under the cover of the beach bar and sit back and enjoy Alila’s hospitality.

The pool menu is great (not enormous) and is more snacky type fine food, however the beach front restaurant is a stones throw away from the pool and offers a more substantial selection. The Beach Bar offers a good variety of cocktails to choose from and a small selection of wine.

We love the peacefulness of the Alila, its full of couples hanging out resting and relaxing, probably not a great idea to bring 20 kids with you, but if they are well-behaved, i am sure it wont be a problem

We are yet to stay at the Alila (we hope to do that very very soon) so when our villa gets noisy and we are in need of some peace we will continue to head on down there for the day and do what we love doing, sun baking, sipping on cocktails and enjoying the serenity of this sensationally beautiful seminyak resort.

Screen Shot 2016-02-20 at 12.19.14 PM

Bali and of course Seminyak is renowned for their spectacular sunsets. Every single day at around 5.30pm ish you will see locals and tourists alike flock to the beach, beach clubs or roof top bars to witness the dazzling show that this island is famous for.

If you are in town – it would be criminal not to participate in this ritual. The sky literally puts on a breathtaking performance,  painting the skyline a multitude of colours : pink, yellow, orange, purple, greys, blues, it is truly an experience you must not miss.

The snobs love doing it with a cocktail in hand (of course we do) so we have put together a list of just a few of our favourite places to kick back and watch the show.

As mentioned in a previous post – this place is our local – and we head there often as its only 2 minutes from home. When the clock strikes 5, I grab my bag and head on down to Ku.  Its hard not to have a good time at  Kudeta, there plenty of people and the atmosphere is buzzing. There are loads of spots to sit and watch it all happen, upstairs downstairs, poolside, daybed, they have every vantage point covered. The staff are fantastic and the cocktails are the best.  If you want to snag  a day bed or sit on the seats the butt up to the beach (front row) best to get there early or call and make a booking,  these are probably the best seats as there is nothing to distract you except the pirate ship kites and the beach sellers waving sarongs in your face.  Kudeta is one of my favourites to watch the nightly show, and not because it’s within stumbling distance from my home, its because this is place is an institution in Seminyak and it always feels special to be there. We love Kudeta.

snobby sunsets

Another one of my favourites is the W Retreat & Spa Seminyak . This place is always pumping, DJ’s playing, people dancing, staff full of friendly smiles and crazy fun cocktails that will send your sugar levels spiralling out of control.  They have two sunset areas – and our favourite place is to sit on the huge incredibly comfy beach beds right in front of the Ice Bar (the right hand side when you walk in) a little less people and 180 degree views  of the beach / sunset with no obstructions – sshhh dont tell too many people.

The other option is Woo Bar on the left hand side when you walk in – this fun bright and buzzing area is another great spot to take in the show, however, there is a (beautiful) temple right at the front which can obstruct the sunset views. Here the cocktails are crazy and the staff are crazier. Be sure to get a picture standing in front of the big W at the beach entrance at sunset – this is an instagram must, your friends will be jelly for ages !

Potato Head Seminyak

Everyone that comes to town wants to experience Potato Head – since opening their doors in 2010 – this place has certainly made a name for itself as the party place in the hood. Pot Head as us locals call it – has held some massive events, Ellie Goulding, Fat Boy Slim and Snoop Dog, just to name a few. As well as their parties… it is a super cool,  very glam spot to watch a sunset or two when you are in town. This venue is so popular if you dont get in early or book a seat, day bed, etc, it can fill up fast and on occasions, hard to get into. This place is huge, the semi circular shape and its multi tiered layout ensures it has lots of viewing areas to take in the show – with poolside seats obviously being the favourite providing an awesome view out to the Indian ocean.  There is a great selection of  cocktails – get stuck in to a millionaire martini and the Kookaburra . The main bar and bistro serves up some great food and the French fine dining upstairs offers a quieter less busier spot to drink and dine and a very romantic spot to watch the sunset and all the crazy stuff that is going on below in the pool and around the whole “arena” We love Potato Head – but it can get pretty busy – the place is massive with something to suit everyone – the party goes on all day and all night – from pre dinner drinks to lots of late night dancing.

Snobs Tip: Make a day of it – get there early, bag a lounger by the big blue pool, get your suntan on and hang on in there till the sun goes down. You will love it.

potato head potato head

Some super special and snobby places out of Seminyak for you to try :

Oh my snob – this beach club is amazing. Situated right on Jimbaran Beach, everything about this place is BEAUTIFUL  Sundara is totally luxe, you will die when you walk in, especially when you catch sight of the pool which stretches on forever and ever. Its smack bang on Jimbaran beach where the water is blue and the sand is soft. Grab a cabana and order some wine from one of the best wine lists on the island and be sure to taste their cocktails – give the frozen apple martini a whirl… you wont be disappointed, what do they say …. an apple a day keeps the doctor away, well you can get your daily dose here.  The views of the sunset are, again, breathtaking. Get there in the afternoon, enjoy that pool and the beautiful beach and of course it goes with out saying, you must stay on for the sunset. Again – be sure to book, especially in high season.

Screen Shot 2016-02-20 at 1.07.01 PM

sundara and that pool

This super glam beach club and perfect sunset spot is a MUST visit whilst you are holidaying in Bali. You will be literally blown away when you walk thru the doors. This clifftop venue in the Uluwatu area it is perched 50 meters above sea level – the views are spectacular.

Its approximately a 45 minute drive from Seminyak but so very very worth it -again,  make a day out of it – visit Binging beach (more about that stunning beach in another post) and head down to El Kabron in the afternoon for a swim in their pool which literally perches  on the edge of the cliff looking out to the blue waters.  These guys have got it right ! With a spanish atmosphere you can snack on  an assortment of their delicious tapas treats and sip on cooling cocktails as you watch the sun go down. You will not want to leave …. their restaurant is also fantastic if you have room for more.

There is a special VIP sunset viewing deck – which if not too busy I’m sure the staff will gladly direct you down there – personally i prefer sitting poolside front row and taking in the incredible views that this club offers – 3 words for you snobs DONT MISS IT.

el kabron

There are loads more places to do sundowners in Seminyak and of course Bali – we will keep adding to our Snobby Sunset Spots each week to make sure you dont miss out. Stay tuned snobs.
